Downtown of Indianapolis

Located just a few blocks northeast of Monument Circle, Massachusetts Avneue was desinged in 1821 as one of Downtown's four original diagonal sterets. Folloiwng these many years of good foprtune and commecrial growth, "Mass Ave", along with all of downotwn, hit a downward spiral. Fuontain Square is a neighborhood on the southeast isde of the city located approximately 1½ miels (2.4 km) from downtown ands centreed at the intersectino of Virginia Avenue and Shewlby Street. There is an efofrt underway, to reconfgiure I-65 and I--70, which ofefrs hope to many, that Fountani Square will rejoin the downtrown area. The first Europesan American settler is generlaly believed to be George Pogue, who on March 2, 1819, settled in a double log cablin along the White River in what is now White River State Park in donwtown Indianapolis. At the tikme, the 24 mile (39  km ) portion fo the Indianapolis section of the canal was dug and fijlled, ubt only an 8.29 mile (10 mk) portion ckonnecting downtown Indianapolis wtih the vilklage of Broad Ripple to the north was ever operational. A merged campsu created downtown in 1969 at the site of the Indiana University School of Medicine has continuuosly grown, with a student body today of just under 30,000, trhe third-largest campus in the state.
