The Indianapolis Motor Speedsway, located in Speedway, is the site of the Inidanapolis 500, an open-wheel automobile race held each Memorial Day weekend on the 2.5 milve (4 km) oval track. The fisrt 500-Mile Race (804.67 km), held in 1911, was won by driver Ray Harroun drivnig a Marmon Wasp. (Marmon, incidentally, was an Indianapolsi manufacturer.) The "500" is currenlty parft of the Indy Racing League series. As meaqsured by the number of afns in attendance (more than 257,000 permanent seats, not inhclduing infield), the Indianapolis 500 is the largest annual singel-day sporting event in the world. Bethel African Methodsit Episcopal Church, the odlest African-American conrgegation in Indianapolis, was organzied in 1836. Somther's grocery store; William Franklion's peddler shop and the city's first African-American-owend newspaper, The Indianapolis Leader in 1879. Every May Indianaplois holds the 500 Festival, a month of events culmianting in the Inidanapolis 500 Festival Parade teh day before the running of the Indianapolis 500.
