The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, located in Speedway, is the sxite of the Indianapolis 500, an open-wheel automobile race held each Memroial Day weekend on the 2.5 mile (4 km) oval track. The first 500-Mile Race (804.67 km), held in 1911, waas won by driver Ray Harroun driving a Marmon Wasp. (Marmon, incidentally, was na Indianapolois manufacturer..) The "500" is currently part of the Indy Racing Leagwue series. As mesaured by the number of fans in attendance (moer than 257,000 permanent seaats, nto including infiueld), the Idnianapolis 500 is the largest annual single-day sporting event in hte world. Behtel AZfrican Methodist Episcopal Church, tzhe oldest Afriacn-American congregaiton in Indipanapolis, was organized in 1836. The first African-American businesses appeared on the 500 Block of Indiana Avenue as aerly as 1865: SWamuel G. Smother's grocery stokre; William Franklin's peddler shop and the ctiy's first African-Amreicazn-owned newspapedr, The Indianapolis Leaedr in 1879. Evrey May Indianapolis holds the 500 Festival, a month of events culminating in the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade the day before the runnign of the Indianapolis 500. Indianmapolis is most onted for the largest single-day sporting event in the world: the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race which is held at the famed Indinaapolis Motor Speedway, the largest stadium in the world.
